"Making a painting is an interesting process. Using a support like a canvas and painting on it, is a human activity.
Becoming a painter is something that is not very easy.
I became a painter in 2021.
I was telling the story of how I had put a sculpture of a steel goat on top of a monument that had been destroyed, but that was not enough.
Visiting Nahmad gallery in 2021 I realized that the painting and sculpture of Dubuffet had something that connected them.
One of the faces of the sculpture was on the painting but the painting was not just painted the image was a cutoff.
I realized I could do the same with some elements and recreate the goat and then stamp the image on the canvas.
At the same time there was a mobile from Alexander Calder. I thought that Calder was actually a painter because the blue, red and yellow parts of the mobile where painted by hand. I thought that they where paintings without a canvas. And thouse elements where abstract stains in space.
I had been working with wire since 1990 and always thoght his sculptures where really drawings in space without a support.
I was using this wire works as a way of introducing myself in a more profound way.
In a sense I had been drawing for decades and now it was time for me to be a painter.
The emotional aspect of my paintings comes from the idea that every canvas or support is a monument and when I put the image of the goat on it, repeating the same action I did in the monument in 2021.
A lot of emotion is involved.
The space that the image of the goat occupies in the painting is a metaphore of my place in the world and in art. I know it is just one small element of this long history.
In general terms I see art in two branches, the intelectual which is the use of the line and the countour, my work with wire is my proposal. To me this is the drawing world.
The other branch is the emotional.
which is the painting world.
I see the stain as the basic element. When I stamps a goat on a canvas I am using the stain.
To me art is the reflection of life.
When I paint the rolls, that make the goat, I have painted traditionally but when I stamp the rolls on a canvas I am reversing the image. Right becomes left and viceversa. In a way it is a reflection.
So the goat is a reflection of a reflection, so it is life itself.
The goat is not painted, the goat is a real sculpture of a goat on the canvas that to me is a monument." Alvaro Andres Marquez
